Where in the World is Isaac? Week 1

Hi Room 6&7,

Thanks so much for the amazing questions you asked on my last blog post.  I really appreciate you commenting.

There were so many questions that I had to create a whole blog post to answer them!  You really had some amazing guesses about where my video was taken, but, sadly, none of them were correct.  That video was taken in Notting Hill, London on the deck at the back of the place where we are staying.  Here are some fun facts about Notting Hill, and about the other place we went to in our first week

Notting Hill, London

Movie Making

Did you know that where I'm staying was actually in a famous movie called Notting Hill and the shop right below us was where one of the scenes was taken.  People come past all the time and take photos of the shop.  I found this out the embarrassing way when I came out of the shower and looked out the bedroom window and saw a group of people taking pictures below. Ahhhhh!  I was too scared to go in my bedroom till about 10 minutes after that!

You can just see my bedroom window on the top right above the bookshop.

Something really quirky about where we're staying is that it has a skylight on the deck that looks down into the famous bookshop, that is now a tourist shop.  It's very weird, but kind of cool.

Portobello Road Markets

We're staying on Portobello Road which is famous for it's markets.  There are market stalls on both sides of the street selling fruit, vegetables and clothes, but it's most famous for lots of antiques.  The streets are always very crowded and people often walk on the roads making it difficult for cars to get by.  On Saturdays and Sundays it gets so busy that you can barely walk because of the crowds.

Terrace Houses

Notting Hill is also famous for rows of brightly coloured terrace houses.  You can see them all around Notting Hill in a range of colours like blue, green, yellow, orange, pink and even purple.  It makes it seem very bright and cheerful.

Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill is also known for the Notting Hill Carnival which happens every year.  It is a Caribbean themed street festival, where there's a big parade through the streets.  We went to the Carnival last time we were in London and it was very crazy everywhere in Notting Hill.

When the carnival first started in 1996 500 people went to watch it.  Now there over 50,000 performers in the parade and over 1 MILLION people come to watch.

Other Questions...

I loved all the other questions that you asked me

What has been your favourite part of the trip so far?

My favourite part of the trip has been going to the Electric Cinema where we got to watch a movie on a couch/bed and how clean Singapore is.

What has been your favourite place to visit  so far?

I am really enjoying London because I get so much nostalgia.  We used to come here for 3 months every year, so I'm enjoying going back to the places we used to go.

What has been your favourite food to eat in the UK?

Bear Yo-yos and  San Pellegrino Limonata drink.

What are you looking forward to doing?

I'm looking forward to going to Disneyland!!!

How long was the plane ride to get there?

The flight from New Zealand to Singapore was 12 hours and the flight from Singapore to London was 13 hours .

What place are you going to next?

Next  we are going to York which is still in the UK.  Then back to London for 10 days.  Then we are going to Denver, Park City Utah, Los Vegas, Grand Canyon and then Los Angeles.

In Singapore did you visit, Universal Studio or Candylicious?

Unfortunately we couldn't go to Universal because the queues were really long on the days we were there.  But we did go to Candylicious and got delicious ice-creams.

These are some of the chocolate dipped ice-creams on sticks.

We chose gelato.  I had a mixed berry sorbet because it was so hot I thought it would be refreshing.  Patch chose Peppermint-chocolate because he always choses that flavour and Finn chose Blue Sky.

Comments

  1. Isaac, your adventures are quite humorous and the next time you take a shower keep the drapes closed. In a couple of years you will be able to watch the movie. You should ask your parents if you can listen to the Notting Hill sound track it is one of my favorites.

    1. Hi Mike! Thanks so much for commenting. Yes I will always keep the drapes closed when I'm getting dressed now! (We call them curtains!) I will see if Mum can download the Notting Hill sound track for our road trip to see you. Can't wait to see you soon! Isaac

  2. Hi Isaac,

Wow you look like you are having a great time! Thanks for sharing your adventures with us :)
You said you used to visit the UK for 3 months every year, did you always stay in Notting Hill?
What is your favourite place in the UK?
The students are so jealous of your delicious Candylicious Ice Creams and wished they could reach into your computer and grab some for themselves.

It was 0degrees here this morning so this is a very chilly Room 6/7 signing off.

  3. Hi Room 6/7,

When we came in the past sometimes we stayed in Notting HIll, sometimes other parts of London. We also used to stay in a city in Scotland called Aberdeen. One time we stayed in place that used to be a small fishing village called Fitte. The village was laid out in two square shapes and it was very cool to visit.

My favourite place in the UK would have to be probably London because there's so many cool museums.

I wish I could give you all some icecream too!

I hope you're all staying warm. We are in Denver at the moment and it's reaching about 30 degrees most days so it's a different than 0 degrees.

I hope you're having a good time. from Isaac.
